HIP HOP HARMONY (HHH) shapes and reinforces urban culture as a power for social and economic transformation in the African context.
HHH is a 2-part project that will regionalize Hip Hop; bridging divides in Africa while strengthening and developing the quality of Hip Hop expression.
HHH includes one prized Emcee from MALI, SENEGAL, MAURTIANIA, MOROCCO & GUINEA BISSAU, along side a DJ - who will converge in Dakar, Senegal in Nove...mber of 2010 to produce an album. This aspect of HHH will be produced by Ze Manel Fortes, the composer of the first Pan-African Opera (The Sahel Opera) & Jean Pierre Senghor, known for his longstanding work as pianist for Gilberto Gil. After the recording, HHH will travel to neighboring, Guinea Bissau to participate in an artist residency program and engage BIG UP GB, Guinea Bissau’s hip hop movement.
Guinea-Bissau’s under-recognized and under-supported urban culture is a key focus of this project. Guinea-Bissau is isolated from its neighbors by language (Portuguese Creole), a small economy, and a tumultuous recent history of conflict and narco-trafficking. Though tremendously popular at home, Guinea-Bissau Hip Hop has received little local support, regional and international projection.
Cobiana Communications & Culture is a non-profit organization based in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. We focus on and believe in the power of culture and communication to drive social and economic transformation. Cobiana Communications grew out of Cobiana Records, a record label that transmits the cultures, dignity and identity of Bissau-Guineans. Cobiana represents some of Bissau’s most cherished musical heroes, who have proven that one well-placed act of communication can change everything.
Join us in making HHH a reality. The proceeds of this event will go directly to producing deserving MC’s from these 5 NW African countries, and helping them contribute to a very isolated youth movement in Guinea Bissau.
